I've learned two ways to predict the fierceness of an upcoming winter.
When the corn husks are thick, you'll have a big winter. This trick obviously assumes you know what thickness a normal corn husk is.
Wooly worms come out into the street in fall. If they are brown you'll have a light winter, if they are black prepare for a heavy winter.
Do you know what a wooly worm is? I love the way wooly worm sounds so much I'd tattoo it on myself.

What if the wooly is half brown and half black? Then do you just go by what color is more dominate? I saw a wooly worm the other day. I think it had a brown stripe inbetween two black stripes.
