Day One on the Road

It always take me triple the time I allot to pack for a trip. While harvesting from the garden I noticed that the newly shorn lawn trimmings had been spewed into my squash and watermelons. Because we have had an unusually large amount of rain, I knew that if I left the grass clippings sitting on my plants they would rot. So, I had to remedy that situation, tacking an additional hour onto our departure time.

By 2:18pm we were gassed up and on the road. With two dogs weeping behind me in a cage and Bill Scrapps trying every 2.5 minutes to move from the passenger's seat to my seat, I wondered if this trip was a terrible idea. I told myself it would get better and it did. After my posse came to the conclusion that we weren't stopping any time soon, they all shut up and in Bill's case, went to sleep.

Within an hour and a half I was desperate for a pee break. I pulled over at a rest stop and all four of us relieved our bladders. Not wanting to pull over every hour I decided that all drinks were off limits for me. We managed to make it another 3 hours before a bathroom break was again necessary.

By 9pm middle Tennessee and 10 pm Virginia time I was ready to throw in the towel. It was dark and rainy, a driving combination I'm not particularly fond of. Additionally, I was dehydrated. I pulled over to a town with ample hotel options that I could see from the freeway. After calling around and comparing prices I decided on a Comfort Inn. The price was decent and I appraised the hotel as a 1 out of 5 stars on my terrifying scale (a 5 star hotel would have an advertisement out front stating that their bed bugs were friendly!). They also allowed dogs and had free wifi.

I escorted my pups and luggage into the room. That may sound simple, but it wasn't. As I mentioned, I packed a blender and quite a few other items of comfort. A friendly man with a styrofoam box smelling of french fries schooled me on the most appropriate way to push the bellhop luggage thingy. The dogs countered his helpful advice by forming leash knots around the caddy and we tripped our way into our room. Again I doubted the sanity of this trip. The room was nothing fancy, but it would do.

The only purchases I made that day were for gasoline. Thus far I had achieved my goal of not purchasing any food. Our hotel was only 1.5 hours away from our hiking spot. Tomorrow the real fun would begin.

  1. Also to solidify our differences, I hate any delays in departure. Hence, me and my boyfriend occasionally start our trips bickering.
