Part two: Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita

Sunday after a yoga on the beach session we decided to get going to Sayulita. Sayulita is a small artsy beach town about an hour north of Puerto Vallarta. We opted to rent a car versus taking the bus so that we could take more side trips should we want a break from Sayulita. A projected one hour trip turned into a two hour trip as we spent time in often stopped traffic on a curvy single road seemingly in some sort of Mexican jungle. You never want for food in Mexico. Whether on the highway or stopped in a jungle people are selling shrimp on a stick, produce, whatever you want.

We rented a whole condo via Airbnb in Sayulita on a bit of a hill with a view of the town and the ocean from our porch. Overall we felt as though we landed a pretty sweet spot. Given that the beach was our primary reason for selecting Sayulita we made the short walk to it right after setting our bags down. We were sorely disappointed. It was supposed to be a surf town and the water was looking pretty murky and drab. In addition there was more trash than one would hope for on the sand. I quickly developed an emergency plan which involved an email to our host and the good old Google.

Fortunately between our host and google we were able to find several beach areas nearby that sounded cleaner and less populated.

We spent the next day walking around, getting cheap  massages, and eating. Later Joseph rented a standing paddle board. We took turns learning in the hour before the board was due back to the soon to be closed shop. We were both hooked and now had an agenda for Tuesday. We would rent these suckers all day and paddle to the nice beaches I had researched.

Yes, you can buy donuts out of the back of a truck

We continued to find adorable chihuahuas everywhere

Our condo of course was accessed only by spiral staircases

Tuesday after medicating for a bit of travelers diarrhea, no prescription required, we went to the paddle board place. I didn't quite have standing down yet and I didn't want to fall but I managed. We paddled one and a half miles down the coast of Sayulita, getting kissing distance to Pelicans and other birds. We spied on fish in rocky outlets. When we could paddle no more we found a beach on the coast that looked like a promising stop for water. Fortunately it was a fancy yoga resort type place and they gave us water free of charge. We played in the clear beautiful water and set back home. Joseph fell approximately 15 times, I maintained my policy of not falling in the water. That's not to stay I stood the whole time, I didn't but I did become pretty confident in my paddle boarding abilities. The water was beautiful and warm. Back in town we scored some food and booked a boating expedition for later in the week.
